Be Consistent.
As I noted in the inaugural post, I started this blog on the advice of the many blog gurus there are out there, and because I do have a thing or two to share that I believe have value. But I didn’t think everything all the way through before launching.
For example, one of the most important characteristics of a useful and successful blog is consistency. Readers should be able to rely on a consistent tone to avoid confusion and a consistent publishing schedule to avoid annoyance. I stand on pretty solid ground with the tone, I think. The consistency, not so much.
I’m still feeling out a publishing schedule. I don’t want to make it so seldom that readers lose interest, nor so often that I’m posting rubbish just to make the post. I’ll probably settle on twice a week. Monday and Thursday, say.
That’s not the big consistency issue that I need to deal with immediately, though. No, the big issue at this moment is my leaving town for the next week and half and…and… (I can barely make myself say it)…and not having Internet access the whole time.
Yes, that’s right. I started a blog, will post maybe three entries, and then will leave it hang for a week and half.
Very clever of me, don’t you think?
Plan ahead.
This is not the best way to build blog readership. I’m pretty new at it and I know that. In retrospect, I should have waited until my return to launch the blog, then would have been able to get off to a regular, steady start. But what’s done is done. And it’s not a disaster, but merely not optimal. And it serves as an important reminder to not start big projects until you have time to dedicate to running them. (Notice I didn’t say “to complete them”, because I don’t believe that to be a good idea either–but that’s a post all its own).
So why the hiatus?
It’s time for the annual family vacation to warmer climes. The lack of Internet access where we stay is a good thing because, frankly, I’m something of an Internet junkie. This will force me to relax and not work, once I get through the initial withdrawal. Well, not work as much. I’ll still have some stuff with me to work on during the kids’ naps. (I’ve got a lot of catching up to do since some virus made its way through the family over the last few weeks and pretty much derailed everything.)
So, anyway. I just wanted to reassure you that this isn’t a blog that gets started and flames out when the novelty wears off, as is all too common. It’s just one with a poorly implemented start.
See you when I get back!

Good tips here, I have to admit that being consistent is my biggest motivator. We decide what we write about all the time - making notes and following through.
When will you be back? That is the real question.
Well, I’m back now, and you can look forward to regular posting to resume soon.
Not the MOST helpful suggestion, since it involves you cranking out a couple of posts right this second, but a lot of blogs will let you post-date your entry, so you could still put up posts on Monday and Thursday, even when you’re far far away. We would never know the difference.
Oh, wait. You’re already back. But you just Twittered this. I am SO confused.
